Mirrors

The writers group that I belong to Writers Out West, have challenged ourselves to write something about one word which will contain no more than 300 words. For one as "wordy" as myself, this is quite the challenge, but here is my effort for the word Mirrors.

Mirrors

A pane of glass is a window to the world. Add a silvered, reflective surface, and it becomes a portal into countless other dimensions. Instead of looking outward, we look back, and when we do, we never truly know exactly what we will find. The present, the past, and perhaps even the future all wait within its silent, silver depths.

Will I recognize the face that looks back at me today? I was once young, then I matured, and now I have finally grown old. I see the person I deeply cherish, the one I once was. Every changing season of my life is reflected in the mirror before me. Yet, I cannot help but wonder: can I also catch a fleeting glimpse of the person I have yet to become? That is the exact mystery that holds our collective gaze. The mirror reveals far more than a face; it reflects a lifetime.

Looking over my shoulder stand those who came before me: my loving parents, wise grandparents, dedicated teachers, faithful friends, and even the kind strangers who shaped my journey. They pointed me toward hidden paths I could not yet see, and because of them, I stand where I am today. Their voices still whisper through memory, encouraging courage, offering quiet wisdom, and reminding me that every choice, every triumph, and every failure became another vital brushstroke on the vast, complex portrait of my life.

Looking into a mirror is to reflect in more ways than one. It is to honor the life lived, to learn from the long road traveled, and to hope for what still lies ahead. In this simple pane of glass, we see not only our own reflection but the grand, unfolding story of our lives.
